SCS works with a variety of industries to rehabilitate and protect infrastructure with specialized protective coatings. We help clients identify plans for remediation and schedule and install coating systems with fast cure times that work for the long term.

Hatchery

SCS has worked on a variety of new and existing hatchery projects in North America. Our involvement is the protection of new concrete, or the rehabilitation and coating of existing concrete utilized in raceways, ponds, tanks, effluent basins, water treatment tanks, and hatchery building. Due to the nature of generally high water flow rates in some of the hatchery processes, concrete quickly erodes and reduces the life cycle of that tank or process. Additionally, the exposed concrete aggregate has a rough surface which will impose injuries to fish and a reduction in fish production. SCS has worked with numerous coatings manufacturers and can provide several solutions.

PULP AND PAPER

Many of the paper mills in North America are older, with limited time and resources to address the many outstanding maintenance issues. When capital becomes available, projects must be done on a fast-track basis to minimize downtime. SCS has installed coatings on tile, concrete, and metal pulp and stock storage tanks providing years of extended service life. Coating formulations are available for wastewater, bleached pulp, 50-percent caustic solutions and other high temperature chemical exposures. SCS will work with the mill to determine the best coating or lining solution for their needs. Over the years and throughout North America, SCS has planned and safely tackled many quick shutdown type situations within this industry.

Water and Wastewater

SCS has worked on potable water projects where the application requires an ANSI/ NSF 61 approval. The applications require the coating to bridge cracks, adhere to various substrates, withstand movement when the tank is filled, endure thermal shock, cure quickly, and last a long time.

Our applications include:

  • Potable water storage tanks/reservoirs
  • Primary/secondary chemical containment
  • Chlorine contact chambers
  • Clearwells
  • Flocculation basins
  • Filter beds

For wastewater (WWTP) applications, the effect of biogenic sulfide corrosion and the formation of a sulfuric acid solution on concrete surfaces exposed to the sewer environment are devastating. Concrete is made of sand, rock, and cement. The cement, a mixture of minerals and water locking the sand and rock into place, is most vulnerable to the effects of hydrogen sulfide and acid attack. The rate of concrete corrosion depends on the permeability of concrete and the amount of gaseous hydrogen sulfide that is adsorbed to the moist walls within WWT plants. Signs of prolonged exposure to mild acid attack include rust bleeding, cracking, and spalling of the concrete. SCS has worked very successfully in the concrete rehabilitation and coatings that are resistant long term to H2S, sulfuric acid, and UV exposure in numerous WWTP facilities in the U.S.

Our applications include:

  • Aeration basins
  • Lagoons
  • Lift stations
  • Oxidation systems
  • Digesters
  • Clarifiers

Power and Utilities

The power and utility industry has a tremendous amount of infrastructure that requires protection against corrosion and erosion. SCS has worked on major projects within utilities to provide solutions on projects such as coating the interiors of deionized water storage tanks and condensate tanks. We have selected and applied coatings in cooling towers to form a permanent, durable coating that can withstand the ongoing moisture, corrosion, and thermal conditions. The coatings, with proper application procedures, provide a barrier to prevent the water treatment chemicals from the ongoing process of corrosion in distribution decks and basins.

Our applications include:

  • Distribution decks
  • Collection basins
  • Deionized water storage tanks
  • Frac water storage pits and ponds
  • Condensate tanks
  • Ice storage tanks
  • Chilled water tanks
  • Field erected towers
  • Packaged towers
  • Cooling towers

Chemical and Food Processing

SCS has worked with several varied chemical and food processing industries to rehabilitate and protect much of the infrastructure with specialized protective coatings. Due to the production environment, there are limited scheduled times to perform project tasks. Therefore it is critical to schedule proper surface preparation procedures and install coating systems with fast cure times that will work for the long term. All of our specified coating systems have been or are FDA and USDA (FSIS) approved. We will work with our clients to help identify plant areas or locations that may compromise regulatory standards and identify plans and schedules for remediation.

Our applications include:

  • Ergonomic non-skid soft floors with biofilm inhibitors
  • Air washer repair and coating (plant air handling systems)
  • Food storage freezer floors
  • Coating stainless steel ethylene glycol cooling tanks
  • Propylene glycol process facility coating
  • Potato farm conveyor trough erosion protection
